I Do What I Do

Even before I realized that I was answering my life’s call, I had my first students. When I was in first grade, I remember helping my older sister with her second grade homework. I don’t recall if I was in elementary or middle school, but my mother would take with her to her Accounting class at a local community college so that I could help her with her homework. I helped my first official student in Calculus while I was in college. I continued to volunteer at a local private school through college and helped my friends with their college papers. Once I acquired my first job, I could not stay away from the children. I volunteered as a Junior Achievement presenter in the local schools. Over the years, I have realized that children are not the only ones who need help in school. As a result, I have tutored many college and graduate students in math, writing, and business courses. It took many years for me to realize that people were getting paid for what I was doing. In 2011, I signed up with Wyzant.com to find more students to help. Before leaving to pursue my own venture, I logged over 600 hours of tutoring on the website. I also helped several other students who contacted me directly on a weekly or as-needed basis. Once the demand for my services extended beyond the 10-15 weekly part-time hours that I could devote to my students, I was constantly denying services to many who needed help for themselves or their children. Of course that would never do, so Promise Learning was born. I have enlisted the help of certified teachers, educational professionals, and college graduates to help me meet the needs of students from kindergarten to adult. I am also working part-time at a local private school in the Mentor Room to provide educational support to high school students who are working independently in courses to meet GA graduation requirements. For a short time, I also worked in their Independent Study Program which provides structured, individualized educational instruction for students in academic courses required to meet GA graduation requirements. In an effort to do my part to give back to the communities that have blessed me, I offer free tutoring to students for an hour after school at local high schools.

In my ample spare time, I administered the Read2Lead program at a local elementary school for the PTA, volunteer to facilitate Junior Achievement programs in local schools, served on the Title I Parent Advisory Board for Fulton County, served as a volunteer and judge for STEM events and competition in Fulton County, and served as a scholarship application evaluator for a local chapter of a national sorority. Professionally, I have held various engineering, marketing, and project management positions for nearly 20 years in Corporate America and worked as a Fulton County school bus driver for 3 years.
